Alderweireld does not miss the Premier League: "Fun was gone by a lot of training and travel"

Last summer, Toby Alderweireld caused a small shock wave when he exchanged the Premier League for Qatar. The 32-year-old defender left Tottenham and opted for an adventure at Al-Duhail SC. "I want to see my children grow up," our compatriot explains his choice in the podcast of media company 433.

After 6 years of Tottenham Hotspur, Toby Alderweireld decided this summer to continue his career with Qatari Al-Duhail SC. A choice that raised the eyebrows of many.

"I think this was my last chance to have another adventure," Alderweireld explains his choice. "After my career, we will go back to live in Belgium."

"My manager informed me in the summer about the interest from Qatar. Then you immediately think about the consequences that such a switch could have. Both for myself and for my family."

"I'm too proud to stop at the Red Devils."

Still, Alderweireld's choice was not purely about the financial picture. "At Tottenham I was often away from home. I had to travel a lot and was hardly home."

"That played a big part in my decision, because I want to see my children grow up. The fun was gone because of the many training and travel", the defender is honest.

"I missed my children too much. For example, I could also stop at the Red Devils to have some more free time, but I didn't want to do that, because I am far too proud to play for my country."
